Gang party in school busted
By : V. Shankar Ganesh
KLANG: The number eight and yesterday's date 08.08.08 did not prove to be auspicious for some members of the Gang 08.
Many, especially the Chinese community in Malaysia, celebrated the day with dinners, parties and even mass weddings.
Not to be outdone, Gang 08 decided to have their own celebrations. Some of these were passed off as birthday celebrations, with invitation cards handed out.
It is understood that several politicians were also invited, but all declined after learning who were behind the parties.
One such party, however, ended badly for gang members.
The 20 gang members, all students of a secondary school in Klang, organised a celebration. They even had an 8kg cake in the form of the numbers zero and eight, and had the words "Villains SMK Raja Mahadi" written on it.
The party was to be held in the school field but school authorities learnt of the gathering and alerted police, who increased patrols in the area.
At noon, the students slipped out of their classes and gathered at a secluded part of the field. Gang members outside the school passed the cake through the fence.
Soft drinks were served and as they were "partying", teachers and parent-teacher association members broke up the gathering. The number eight portion of the cake had already been eaten by then.
Three gang members and what was left of the cake were handed over to police.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Mat Yusop said police were trying to identify the other students involved.
According to sources, gang members extort money and fight with rival gangs over territory.
It is named Gang 08 because members pay fees in multiples of eight to join.
Gang 08's most infamous member was P. Kalimuthu, better known as Bentong Kali, who joined in the gang 1984. He was shot dead by police in the early 1990s.
'Bentong Kali' rising again

Police believe the notorious extortionist Gang 08 has attacked a man's son, his worker and even his house in three separate incidents.
The string of attacks started on Monday, about 8pm, when a Form One boy was confronted by three men in their 20s while he was placing a religious sticker near a friend’s house in Taman Seri Serendah.
His father, K. Suresh, 38, said his son was first slapped and then kicked into a drain.
"When my son came home and told me what had happened, my wife and I went in search of the men and upon finding them, asked why they had attacked my son," said the scrap metal businessman.
The confrontation ended quickly as the couple saw that one of the men had a parang on him.
Suresh immediately went to the Serendah police station to seek help and even when an officer accompanied him back to the scene, the men remained unafraid and said: "Marilah lawan (Come, let’s fight)."
To avoid any problems, Suresh backed off and the men left without any further incident.
Barely an hour later, about 9pm, Suresh’s worker was stopped by 15 men, who were believed to be drunk.
S. Kalai Mani, 25, was then travelling on his motorcycle to a Deepavali open house at Taman Serendah Indah with a friend, Sathyaset Andevar Paramasivam, 15.
"They called out to me and asked what I was doing in ‛their area. Then, all of a sudden, they started attacking me with sticks, crash helmets and even broken beer bottles," said Kalai Mani, who suffered injuries on the head and arms, and was given outpatient treatment.
"We could not run as we were surrounded," added Kalai Mani, adding that Sathyaset was then set upon by four of the men and was brutally beaten.
"We managed to escape by jumping into a monsoon drain," said Kalai Mani. The two stayed hidden in the drain for about 30 minutes until they couldn’t hear the gangsters’ shouting any more.
Sathyaset was sent home but he complained of persistent dizziness and was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit for bleeding in the head after an operation.
The third incident occurred last night when over 20 men carrying machetes gatecrashed a dinner party at the scrap metal dealer’s house.
A bewildered Suresh said: "They came into my house and shouted, You ingat kita main-main ke? (Did you think we’re just playing?) They then damaged my Proton Satria, my mother’s Proton Saga, and my neighbour’s Perodua Myvi."
Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt Norel Azmi Yahya Affendi said a 27-year-old suspect was arrested yesterday in connection with the second attack. Police are tracking down the other suspects.
Sources said police suspect the Gang 08 could have been involved in another incident on Monday, where a motorcycle belonging to a 17-year-old was burnt.
It was learnt that the Gang 08 periodically visited some schools in Serendah, threatening students while recruiting new members.
Named Gang 08 because members pay fees in multiples of eight, this extortion racket’s most infamous member was P. Kalimuthu, better known as Bentong Kali, who joined the gang in 1984.
He was shot dead by police in the early 1990s.

**Like my brother always says it, It’s ass-tounding that this gang still stood tall after more than a decade. Impressive.
***What surprises me most is that there is no particular articles on Bentong Kali. And this is likewise for Botak Chin. There are discussions on forums, though... You can pick up the pieces and make sense out of it.
*****There are also no pictures of him available on the internet.
